"Rudolf" was really not mine, but we became a team in the show ring. He was sold as a pet, and the breeder had recommended me for trimming. First time he came he was six months old and looked like a rather ordinary puppy. When his owner called for a second time they wanted him both trimmed and also entered to our Cocker Spaniel Club show at the same time. They were not really interested in shows, but had got the idea that they wanted to have a written critique of him. When I trimmed him that time, when he was about 11 months old, it was a totally different dog that I found under the coat. I asked carefully if I maybe could show him at a couple of shows later, and they really liked that idea. In our show it wouldn't have worked as I was both organizer, ring secretary and also had the judge staying at my home. The show day came, wet and rainy. Most dogs kept dry to the best of their best ability, but Rudolf came to the show wet to his skin, to be shown by his owner who never had been at a show before and had no idea, except the things I have told them on what to do. You can imagine what he looked like! But the judge of the day, the well known Sandy Platt, kennel Charbonnel, judged him anyway, after standing him up herself at the trimming table. The owner was oaky at showiing the movements. The only really wet dog won the class! Directly after the class Sandy asked me, without having any idea about my interest in the dog: "Please, can you see if you can find someone else who can handle that dog!". Lillemor Böös, the breeder, was at the show, and without a male of her own. She had time to train him a bit before the best dog class. Now he looked totally different - and he also was a little bit less wet - and he ended up as second best dog this day! At the next show, which also was a Cocker Spaniel Club Show, he was best male, and after that he went on to win on and on and on... Rudolf and I had a lot of great fun together and he was also very close to win Cocker of The Year one year. He became a significant stud dog and with many successful offspring, shown in many of his successful progeny groups. He can be found behind most of the dogs at kennel Pansy's breeding." |
